Murad Hydro Dynamic Quenching Essence Review

I have wanted to jump on the band wagon of Essences for a while. These are a new concept to me and I discovered them with the help of Instagram and the 10 Step Korean Facial Routine…Yep you read that right…10 steps! That is for another blog!

What is an Essence?
These are a lot more lighter and watery than a serum and go underneath your serum to add an extra layer of hydration. They do tend to have less “active” ingredients, but do help to balance the PH of skin after cleansing.

I tried the Murad Hydro Dynamic Quenching Essence

Who is Murad?
Founded in 1989 by Dr Murad is a trained dermatologist,  trained pharmacist and Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA.  His  mission is to share his ground-breaking skincare formulas, and a desire to help people look and feel younger and healthier. He was one of the originators to A.H.A in skin care and creates skin care in a 3 step solution using science. Step 1 – Cleanse/Tone. Step 2 – Treat/Repair. Step 3 – Hydrate/Protect.

Price Tag – Splurge or Steal?
SPLURGE – £59.50.This comes with quite a hefty price tag, I actually got really excited when I saw it and didn’t check before buying! (I had some vouchers and John Lewis was having a 20% off!). You do however need only 1 pump per application, so the 30ml should last a LONG time.

What skin concerns does it help with?
Dehydrated, dull, those concerned with premature aging

Image Beauty Awards 2017
Beauty Shortlist Award Editors Choice 2016

Natural or Man Made?
Man Made

Contains Glylcolic Acid meaning skin is extra sensitive to the sun so a SPF is needed at all times
Contains Silicone (Dimethicone).   Have a read of this, it explains the pro and cons od Silicone.
Contains Urea – An extract from animal wee to mositurise skin – some skin can be sensitive to this

How do I use it?
1 pump after cleansing and toning and before serum AM and PM. 1 pump is enough to massage all over face and neck. Avoid eye area. Make sure you use a SPF during the day, due to the glycolic acid will make your skin much more sensitive to the sun and can make pigmentation worse.

My skin is pretty sensitive and I found using it twice a day a bit too much for my skin.  Currently I am using it every other day in PM. Which my skin finds much better. If I am having a flare up of heat spots, I avoid that area for a few days. I can’t be certain it’s product that is causing the reaction or if its more of a hormonal thang!

How long did I use it for?
4 weeks and still going….

Subtle, fresh, cool as in almost a hint of mint/menthol

Overall Opinion
The packaging looks cool, clean and expensive,. (it should, it was!). I like that you see how much you have left of the product and that it is a pump so you use all that you have paid for. It has a silky texture, that would be from the silicone in it – good or bad the jury is out for me at the mo. It does have a slight sticky residue after first applying, but then dries quickly to almost form a film over you skin.

The first night I was super excited to use it. The  next day my skin felt soooo soft! I was so happy, even getting my husband to stroke my face through out the day. However the more I used it…my sensitive, Rosacea prone cheeks weren’t to keen.  At the same time I had purchased an Orgin Dr Weil Mega-Mushroom Cleanser and was on my period. So I stopped using them all and went back to my normal routine until my skin settled down for about 7 days. I was gutted!!

I think in hind sight I used too much, too soon. With any gylcolic acid if your skin is sensitive it is best to gradually build up to using it daily. I’m now using it every other day in the evenings and will build up to morning as well if I can. I have stopped using the Origins cleanser for now too. Also layering products, which is what the Korean Skincare Steps are all about, are a bit to much for my skin, it feels irritated and claustrophobic.

Would I buy again?
I don’t feel like its made that much of a an impact to pay nearly £60 squideroos, maybe because I am not using it twice a day, every day. It made it feel soft, but I do not feel more hydrated or any fine lines have reduced. I will give it another month of using it in the evenings to see if I can be converted or if I need to send it back.

Overall out of 10
A meh….5/10 for my skin, although if I could use this twice a day every day I do think I would be able to give it a much higher score
